The mayor of Shtit

From the hilltops overlooking the village of Shtit, on the eastern border of Bulgaria, the former mayor of the town shows us the fence that divides Bulgaria from Turkey, built in the last years thanks to European Union funds. A 3m double-fence covered by barbed barbed wire and protected by observation towers and a video surveillance system. Despite these means, however, hundreds of migrants cross this border every week due to the connivance between corrupt Bulgarian border policemen and local human smugglers.

Across the sea it aimed at documenting migrations journeys along main routes of the Mediterranean Sea. Grounding on the previous Through Desert and Sea, the project wants to outline the comprehensive dimension of migration from Southern to Northern shores with the long term goal of enhancing intercultural dialogue, empowering migrants and fostering alternative narratives and perceptions about migration in the Mediterranean countries.
